Automated behavioral work is sold into rooms where three different people have to agree: the scientist who wants the data, the person who owns the facility and its throughput, and whoever signs. This map covers where those seats sit in the United States, roughly how many of each there are, and which of them a single channel usually never reaches. It describes the market rather than your business, and there is nothing to buy at the end of it.
Biopharma with in-house preclinical groups
The segment with a budget line already open, because in vivo capacity is a standing cost rather than a project. Slow to buy and durable once inside, since a method that appears in one study tends to appear in the next twenty.
Who signs: head of in vivo pharmacology, director of preclinical research, VP of discovery biology, study director, and procurement on the paperwork.

Preclinical contract research organizations
The buyer who resells the capability rather than consuming it, which changes the argument entirely. A new method here is a service line they can quote for, so the case lands with commercial people as readily as with scientific ones. Worth naming a limit: the register does not separate preclinical animal work from laboratory testing generally, so the count below is wider than the true segment.

Universities and independent research institutes
The largest population of end users on this page once you count labs rather than institutions, and the hardest to enumerate for exactly that reason. Grant cycles set the timing, a core facility often owns the equipment, and one adopting investigator pulls several others behind them.
Who signs: principal investigator, core facility director, vivarium or animal facility director, director of research operations, and the grants office on the paperwork.

Biotechs at the funded stage
Small teams that outsource most of the work and buy the parts they intend to keep. They move faster than anyone else on this page and they are the least visible, because funding stage is not a field anyone files. They are identified round by round and by who they are hiring.

Laboratory equipment distribution
Not an end user, a route to several hundred of them. This layer already holds the catalog relationship with labs that will never answer a vendor directly, and its people are reached by role in exactly the same way as a research seat.

Where the openings are

Three seats, one sale. The scientist chooses the method, the facility lead judges whether it survives contact with the room, and a third person releases the money. A single channel usually reaches whichever of the three replied last time, and the deal then stalls on the other two. Contacting all three by name, on purpose, is a list problem rather than a persuasion problem.

The demand signal is published, and nobody is reading it at scale. Behavioral work concentrates where central nervous system programs are, and those announce themselves in papers, posters, grant awards and job postings long before anyone buys anything. No purchase register exists for that, which is exactly why watching a few thousand organizations for the signal is worth doing mechanically.

The academic layer is the biggest and the least reachable by any list you can buy. Institutions are countable, labs are not, so anyone working from an off-the-shelf file reaches procurement departments and misses investigators. Identifying the labs one at a time is slow, repetitive and completely doable, and it stays open because most vendors will not do it.

A conference reaches the people who came to it. Specialist meetings are a strong channel for the scientific seat and silent about the facility and finance seats, and they happen twice a year rather than every week. The rest of the market is reachable in between, and in this category that part rarely has a channel pointed at it.
Built from public federal registry data covering US employers that file a benefit plan, current to the 2024 filing year. Counts are banded deliberately. Workforce bands use plan participants as a headcount proxy, so they indicate scale rather than an exact staff count. Owner-only and very small employers are not published in this data, and sector codes are self-reported. Individual laboratories and funding stage are not covered by any public register and are described rather than counted.
